Crispy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries in the air fryer are my latest little obsession. They’re a healthy, delicious alternative to classic fries. You still get a crispy exterior, with that soft, melt-in-your-mouth sweet potato center we all love.

I have to admit, the American obsession with the air fryer is slowly starting to win me over…

How to cut sweet potato fries

  1. Start by washing the sweet potatoes under running water to remove any dirt or residue.
  2. Next, peel the sweet potatoes with a vegetable peeler.
  3. Trim off the ends of the sweet potatoes. Since they’re thin, they tend to burn.
  4. Cut the sweet potatoes into thick slices about 1 cm wide.
  5. Finally, cut the slices into sticks about 1 cm thick for evenly sized fries.

That’s the “10/10” method, but don’t overthink it—this is comfort food, after all. The fries in the photo were definitely not cut perfectly, and they were still delicious.

Tips for extra-crispy fries

Dry the fries thoroughly: After cutting the sweet potatoes, pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps them crisp up.

Use just a little oil: Lightly coat the sweet potato fries with oil before placing them in the air fryer. The oil helps them brown beautifully and crisp up on the outside.

Don’t overcrowd the air fryer: For the best results, don’t overcrowd the air fryer. Arrange the fries in one or two layers without too much overlap so the hot air can circulate properly.

Shake halfway through cooking: Halfway through cooking, briefly remove the air fryer basket and give it a good shake. This helps the fries cook evenly and turn crispy all over.

Dipping sauces for air fryer sweet potato fries

You can serve them with my wing sauce, which is absolutely incredible. Another great option is this homemade sweet chili sauce.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 pinch black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 190 degrees. Peel the sweet potatoes, then cut them into fries.
  • Place the sweet potatoes in a large bowl and toss with the olive oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper.
  • Cook in 2 or 3 batches, depending on the size of your basket, without overcrowding the air fryer. Cook until crispy, about 12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for about 3-4 days. To reheat, simply return them to the air fryer at 170 degrees for 1 to 2 minutes. You can also reheat them in the microwave, but the fries will soften
Substitutions: For the best results, follow the recipe as written. That said, you can switch up the spices and use a different oil.
