Just open the box and you already know how the evening will unfold. The Camembert comes out of the basket slightly domed, with the rind golden in places, and the first spoonful releases a center that genuinely flows.

The garlic tucked into the slits perfumes the cheese without burning, the honey seeps down to the center, and the thyme ties it all together. Dip in a strip of toasted bread, and thereโ€™s not much more to say.

What is air fryer Camembert ?

A whole Camembert, set back in its wooden box lined with parchment paper and cooked in the air fryer until the center turns molten. The rind stays intact and acts as a wall : it is what keeps the cheese in as it melts. The top is scored in a crosshatch, just enough to let in the garlic and honey, never enough to cut all the way through. It is served straight from the box, with toasted bread or roasted potatoes.

The cheese takes its name from the Norman village of Camembert. The air fryer version changes nothing about the cheese itself, only the way it is heated : forced convection browns the rind while the center softens, in a space far smaller than a conventional oven.

From the bistro oven to the air fryer basket

Baked Camembert in its box is a bistro and home-cooking classic, long reserved for the oven : it was gently heated, set in the middle of the table, and everyone dipped in their bread. The principle has not changed; the cheese has simply moved to another appliance.

Preheating adds nothing here. The goal is not to sear the surface, as you would with meat or fries, but to bring the cheese up to temperature evenly. Starting cold even gives you a little more leeway before the rind browns.

Two settings are common. The first, used in this recipe, cooks at 180 ยฐC and lets you choose the texture anywhere between 10 and 15 minutes. A second school of recipes pushes the temperature to 200 ยฐC for 18 minutes, which browns the rind more deeply and heats the center faster. If your appliance runs hot, stick to 180 ยฐC and start checking at the 10-minute mark. The air fryer cooking chart gives you reference points for other ingredients.

The key ingredients for air fryer Camembert

A raw-milk Camembert delivers far more flavor than a pasteurized one, which tends to taste flat once hot. Choose one that is well ripened and soft to the touch : a Camembert that is still chalky in the center will stay dense even when melted. And never remove the rind; without it, you will end up with a puddle at the bottom of the basket.

The container makes all the difference. The wooden box handles dry heat very well and acts as a mold, provided you remove the paper label, any plastic film, and any metal staples. If the box has a transparent window, or if the cheese was bought without a box, replace it with a ramekin or small ceramic dish the same diameter as the cheese, no wider : in a container that is too large, the Camembert spreads out and cooks too quickly. The parchment paper inside is not decorative; it keeps the fat from soaking into the wood and helps the cheese keep a neat shape for serving. Other air fryer accessories make this kind of cooking easier.

Slip the garlic into the slits rather than laying it on top : on the surface, pieces of garlic burn and turn bitter; tucked into the cheese, they perfume it without browning. The same goes for thyme: dried thyme stands up to the heat, while fresh thyme scorches. Pour the honey on after scoring, never before, so it runs down into the cuts instead of caramelizing on its own on top ; halve the amount if you find it too pronounced, as it can quickly overwhelm a raw-milk cheese. For a change, scatter chopped walnuts or dried cranberries over the top before cooking.

Technical tips for great air fryer Camembert

The cues are visual and tactile: the surface domes slightly, glistens, and turns amber in places, and the center yields easily under the back of a spoon.

At 180ย ยฐC, allow 10 minutes for a creamy center that still holds its shape on the spoon, and 15 minutes for a truly runny one, checking from the 10-minute mark onward so the cheese does not overflow.

If the center is still firm, cook it for 2 minutes more and test again, because the cheese goes from creamy to liquid very quickly at the end of cooking. Serve immediately; melted Camembert starts to set as soon as it leaves the appliance, and reheated leftovers turn grainy.

Ingredients

  • 1 raw-milk Camembert in its wooden box

Topping

  • 1 clove garlic cut into slivers
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Preparation

  • Remove the Camembert from its paper wrapper.
    1 raw-milk Camembert
  • Line the wooden box with a sheet of parchment paper, then return the Camembert to the box, keeping the rind intact.
  • Score the top in a crosshatch pattern without cutting through the rind.
  • Tuck the garlic slivers into the cuts.
    1 clove garlic
  • Drizzle the top with the honey and olive oil.
2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Sprinkle with thyme and finish with a few grinds of black pepper.
0.5 teaspoon dried thyme, freshly ground black pepper

Air Frying

  • Place the box flat in the air fryer basket.
  • Cook at 180 ยฐC for 10 to 15 minutes, checking from the 10-minute mark, then stop when the surface is melted and lightly golden.

Serving

  • Lift out the box by the sides and serve immediately, ideally with toasted bread or roasted potatoes.

Notes

Tips
  • Remove the paper label, any plastic wrap, and any metal staple before cooking. If the box has a clear plastic window, or if the cheese does not come in a box, use a small ceramic dish or ramekin the same diameter as the cheese (no wider) to prevent it from spreading.
  • The parchment paper helps the cheese keep a neat shape and makes cleanup easier; without it, the wood absorbs the fat and the box can no longer be reused.
  • Never remove the rind: it holds the cheese together as it melts. Make only shallow cuts.
  • At 180 ยฐC: 10 min = creamy center; 15 min = very runny. Start checking at the 10-minute mark, as the cheese quickly goes from creamy to fully melted.
  • Tuck the garlic into the cuts (otherwise it will burn on the surface). Dried thyme holds up better during cooking than fresh thyme.
  • Serve immediately: Camembert firms up quickly once out of the air fryer.
  • Variation: cook at 200 ยฐC for 18 min (on some appliances), keeping an eye on the browning.
