After my article on the essential ingredients for Asian cooking, I figured it made sense to write a short one about the equipment side. Every item shown here is the exact reference I use myself. You’ll often spot them in my stories on social media or in my recipe photos in general.
Are they the best? Are there alternatives with better value for money? Maybe, probably. But on my end, this is what I use and I get along just fine with it.
The essentials: scale, wok and steamer basket
With this winning trio, almost no Asian recipe will stand in your way! Seriously, from dishes deep in the heart of Sichuan to Japanese classics: 90% can be made with this. Click on the images or the names below to go to the product pages
The very, very handy ones: rice cooker, Asian deep fryer and chef’s knife
The rice cooker is your gateway to a rice addiction. Seriously, it changes your life. Not only is the texture perfect, but the cooking is completely hassle-free and requires no watching. The Asian deep fryer, for its part, lets you make all the little Asian fried foods (with double frying) in a really convenient way. As for the knife, I’ve had this reference for 6 years and I love it.
What seriously improves life: air fryer, sharpener and silicone mats
The air fryer for reheating frozen spring rolls to perfection, the sharpener that turns any low-end knife into one that slices really well, and the silicone mats that hugely improve how you use the steamer basket.
