American Cuisine

It is easy to define the cuisines of certain countries because the food and recipes are indigenous to the region, often derived from necessity or as a means of survival, with the ingredients naturally coming from the local land or sea.

However, given that the United States is a country made up of both the cultures of many other countries and of indigenous peoples, it can be somewhat difficult to define its cuisine. So what exactly are ” American ” recipes ?

The United States is a melting pot of cultures owing to the many immigrants and enslaved people who came there from various countries around the world. A significant part of this equation also comes from the cultures of the indigenous peoples who lived on the land long before colonization. From onion rings to smoked meats, you’ll find it all.

With this great combination of culinary traditions, American cuisine has become more than the sum of its parts and offers something unique. This country has established several dishes that many consider to be examples of an “American” food tradition.

A myriad of dishes could be counted as “American,” but there are a few that match the quintessential image of this diverse and ever-expanding culinary tradition.

American barbecue

Whether it’s for Memorial Day, the 4th of July or Labor Day, families across the United States fire up their grills and invite friends over for a good old-fashioned barbecue, with all the expected traditional favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and coleslaw.

Many barbecues also include good old ribs, chicken or beautiful cuts of beef on the grill.

Southern cuisine

Dishes born from the traditions of the southern USA have become true American staples. Whether it’s fried chicken, biscuits, chicken, fritters, chicken fried steak, gravy, fried green tomatoes or shrimp, these dishes are all hugely popular from California to Maine.

What’s more, cornbread and corn pudding may have southern roots, but they couldn’t be more American. Of course, there’s no shortage of variations, but the heart of these dishes remains the South no matter where you eat them.

A great passion for meat and potatoes

What other country is known for its extra-large cuts of meat, served sizzling on a plate with potatoes and creamed spinach ? The American steakhouse is a fine example of this country’s love for beef, and many of these establishments are considered iconic landmarks in cities across the nation.

The ultimate comforting food, or the “comfort food” tradition

Dishes like macaroni and cheese aka “mac’n’cheese,” nachos, and shepherd’s pie (an iconic savory pie) all evoke the image of sitting by the fire eating warm, comforting meals on a cold day.

You can also put a pot roast in the oven, or cook a meatloaf to satisfy your cravings or cure the winter blues. All of these dishes are an integral part of American culture, even if they may have origins in other parts of the world.

The many seafood specialties

Taking advantage of the treasures offered by the surrounding oceans, Americans have created one of the best ways to eat seafood: the New England clambake. With Maine lobster and local clams or mussels, potatoes and corn on the cob, this summer meal is an American classic.

It is often accompanied by clam chowders, a creamy way to enjoy the flavors of the sea. But let’s not forget the Maryland crab cakes and the Louisiana crab boils either !

Endless desserts

It’s no coincidence that the expression “american pie” isn’t found only in the movie that bears its name. From apple pie to pecan pie, pies of all kinds are one of the most delicious sweet specialties of the US.

Brownies, pancakes, cinnamon rolls, donuts or even cookies and raw cookie dough. But also fried Oreos, cheesecakes (check out my Japanese cheesecakes), candies and sweet drinks of infinite variety—honestly, I’d need 50 more pages if I wanted to name and describe them all.

In short, France has very good pastries, but American pastries and other desserts really have that comforting quality I mentioned earlier.

As an American, these dishes were the soundtrack of my childhood and I couldn’t do without them. I much prefer a carrot cake made by my mom over a fancy 3-tier cake from a renowned bakery.

International dishes, but with an American twist

Many dishes eaten today in the US may originate from the countries that immigrants left to come to America. These foods and recipes have changed over time and have taken on a new “American” component.

In fact, many chefs or food lovers from other countries will say that these international dishes have been ” Americanized ,” like pizza, pasta and Chinese food.

Jewish traditions, source of many delights

During the Second World War, the USA became a kind of refuge for many Jewish communities that settled in particular around New York.

This gave us excellent dishes like pastrami, an absolutely delicious marinated and smoked meat. I really must put out a recipe for you because I haven’t found anything comparable here. It’s all dry. They also brought the New York bagel, which unfortunately, for me and my family, also has no equivalent in France or Belgium 🙁

The air fryer craze

The recent Air Fryer trend among Americans has revolutionized the way they cook and prepare their meals.

These compact and practical cooking appliances have won over American kitchens thanks to their ability to fry foods with very little or no oil, while maintaining a crispy texture and a savory taste.

Air Fryers have gained popularity because of their ease of use, their versatility and their health benefits, as they offer a healthier alternative to traditional frying. American families appreciate being able to quickly and easily prepare classic dishes such as fries, chicken wings, vegetables and even some desserts, guilt-free and without sacrificing flavor.

This culinary trend has also encouraged innovation in recipes and cooking techniques, with many chefs and bloggers sharing tips and ideas to get the most out of this popular appliance. Myself included—I finally gave in and bought one… so expect to find lots and lots of recipes on the site using an air fryer
