Air Fryer Cookies

Yes, as an American myself, I’m sharing my mom’s recipe, the one I grew up with. Consider yourself warned: this American classic is not only simple, it’s seriously addictive. Making these cookies in the air fryer makes life so much easier, and you don’t lose a bit of flavor.

Another great classic: cinnamon rolls

Everyone needs a go-to American cookie recipe in their repertoire, and this one is mine. You know me: I try not to be the kind of blog that tells you my life story before giving you the recipe.

But this recipe has a special place in my heart (and my stomach), because it’s my American mom’s recipe, and I’ve been eating these cookies since I was veeeery little. A bit like my fried Oreos, though those are next-level when it comes to sweets.

I really hope this recipe becomes a favorite and spreads all across France, because most cookies, even bakery ones, are just…meh.

Honestly, once you make this recipe properly, you’ll never want to buy a fancy €3.50 cookie again. That’s been true for plenty of people around me, anyway.

How do you make air fryer cookie dough?

Start by mixing the flour, salt, and baking soda. This step is important because you want the baking soda evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Next, in a separate bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract. A mixer is ideal here, because even softened butter can be tricky to blend into a smooth, creamy mixture. Then beat in the eggs one at a time.

For the second-to-last step, gradually combine the two mixtures; once again, a mixer makes the job much easier.

Finally, add the famous chocolate chips. You can also use plain baking chocolate chopped into small pieces if you like; it costs a lot less.

Portioning the cookies

Once the cookie dough is ready, it’s time to portion and roll it. Try to make the balls more or less the same size so the cookies bake evenly. But honestly, don’t overthink it.

It’s worth noting that the dough can be frozen ahead of time; that’s often what my mom does. That way, cookies are available allll the time, whenever the craving hits. Hehe.

If your air fryer is like mine, it has holes, so you’ll need air fryer accessories such as a small tray or parchment paper: basically, something that will stop the dough from dripping into the bottom of the basket. As a general rule: if it can go in the oven, it can go in the air fryer.

Equipment

  • Papier de cuisson or any heatproof liner without holes that fits in your air fryer

Ingredients

  • 308 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 227 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 150 g granulated sugar
  • 150 g brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 200 g chocolate chips or chunks

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 190°C, using bake mode if available; otherwise, use the air fryer setting.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda.
  • In another bowl, beat the butter, sugars, and vanilla extract until creamy, ideally using a mixer. Beat in the eggs one at a time.
  • Gradually beat in the flour mixture.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Optional, but it helps keep the cookies from spreading too much: cover the dough and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Shape the dough into small balls on parchment paper and cook for 9 to 11 minutes. Cooking time will vary depending on your air fryer.
  • Let the cookies rest for 5 minutes after removing them from the air fryer.

Notes

It’s normal for the cookies not to look fully baked when you take them out. That’s the trick to keeping them from overbaking.
Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer.
You probably won’t be able to cook all the cookies in the air fryer at once, so plan accordingly. The dough freezes very well.
