pâte de saté dans un bol en verre sur une table en bois

Homemade Satay Paste

Satay sauce is delicious, but there’s no need to buy a ready-made mix—the base, satay paste, is incredibly easy to make.

This paste from Indonesian cuisine is delicious in Asian hot pots such as Chinese hot pot, in my satay beef recipe, or tossed with peanut sauce noodles.

Ingredients for Satay Paste

Traditionally, you’ll find fish sauce and shrimp paste. In my testing, swapping them for light soy sauce made little difference.

Curry powder is tasty, but if you can use red curry paste instead, it’s even better!

Not much of a cook, so I was honestly surprised how easy this satay paste was and how smooth it turned out with the coconut milk. Used it on noodles and it tasted way better than I expected, kind of proud of myself 🙂

Cette pâte de saté maison est super simple et vraiment savoureuse, j’en ai fait double pour en avoir d’avance 😊 Les restes étaient tout aussi bons le lendemain, mélangés à des nouilles avec un peu de lait de coco.

Made this satay paste last night and swapped the curry powder for a tablespoon of red curry paste like you suggested. Let it simmer about 2 extra minutes to thicken, and the flavor was even better, super creamy and perfect on noodles.

This satay paste came together so quickly, and my spouse was genuinely impressed by how rich and balanced it tasted in our noodles. They even asked me to make a double batch next time 😊
