Welcome to the fascinating world of air fryers, a modern kitchen appliance that has revolutionized the way many people prepare food. These appliances, famous for their ability to “fry” food with little or no oil, have become essential for those looking to combine health and flavor, particularly in Asian cooking, known for its crispy textures and rich aromas. They first became popular in the USA before making their way to our shores
In this article, I want to share some insights into using air fryers to prepare dishes, including Asian recipes. I’ll explore how these appliances work, why they’ve become so popular, and most importantly, how to choose the ideal model for your cooking needs.
Whether you’re a fan of Vietnamese spring rolls, tempura, Korean fried chicken, chicken drumsticks, cookies or pork tonkatsu, an air fryer can be your best friend in the kitchen, allowing you to make these delicious dishes with less oil while preserving their authentic texture and flavor

Which air fryer do I use?
Let’s get straight to the point: I use the Phillips XL. (Click to visit the Amazon product page). It has a fairly large basket, adequate power and, most importantly, is easy to clean (to make the most of the appliance’s convenience, hahaha)

For a less expensive air fryer, the Cecotec air fryer is very good quality. The Ninja air fryer is one of the best known. It’s more expensive, but it’s the best of the best when it comes to air fryers
Criteria for choosing an air fryer
I won’t dwell on this, as it’s fairly intuitive, but there are three main criteria to consider:
Capacity: Capacity is essential and depends on the size of your family or the number of people you usually cook for. Air fryers come in a wide range of sizes, so choosing the right model is crucial to meeting your needs without taking up too much space in your kitchen. Be careful, though: you could quickly find yourself short on space when making dishes like air fryer crispy pork

Power: The appliance’s power is a key factor in cooking speed and efficiency. A more powerful air fryer heats up and cooks faster, which is ideal for those with busy schedules. However, remember that power can also affect energy consumption.
Price: price plays a major role in choosing an air fryer. There is a wide range of prices, from the most affordable models to more expensive options with advanced features. The Cecotec air fryer is the one I would recommend in the lower price range
Always keep in mind that there are plenty of air fryer accessories available. For example, dividers to turn a single-zone model into a dual-zone one
What is an air fryer?
An air fryer is an electric kitchen appliance designed to replicate the results of traditional deep-frying, but in a much healthier way. At the heart of its operation is a powerful heating element, paired with a fan that distributes hot air quickly and evenly around the food. This high-speed air circulation technology allows food to cook quickly while developing a crispy texture similar to that achieved by deep-frying.
Now let’s compare the air fryer with traditional cooking methods:
- Traditional deep-frying:
- Deep-frying involves immersing food in hot oil, giving it a crispy, golden exterior.
- However, food often absorbs a lot of oil with this method, increasing its fat and calorie content.
- The air fryer offers a healthier alternative, producing food that is just as crispy with a fraction of the oil used in traditional deep-frying.
- Oven cooking:
- Oven cooking is a healthier method than deep-frying, but it generally doesn’t produce the same level of crispiness or browning.
- Thanks to its rapid, high-temperature air circulation, the air fryer manages to replicate that crispy texture while cooking food more evenly and quickly than a traditional oven.

Benefits of an air fryer
Using an air fryer has several significant advantages, especially for those looking to cook more healthily and efficiently. Here are the main benefits of this appliance:
Less oil needed for cooking:
- One of the biggest advantages of the air fryer is its ability to cook food with much less oil than traditional deep-frying.
- This feature is essential for those watching their fat intake, allowing them to prepare lighter dishes without sacrificing crispy texture and flavor.
Healthier, faster cooking:
- In addition to reducing the amount of oil, the air fryer allows for healthier cooking by better preserving the nutrients in food.
- Its ability to cook quickly through efficient hot air circulation significantly reduces cooking time. This means you can prepare meals in record time, a blessing for those with busy schedules.
Easy to use and clean:
- Air fryers are generally very simple to use. Most models have intuitive controls and preset programs for different recipes.
- Cleaning is another strong point. Many models have removable, dishwasher-safe parts, making cleanup after cooking quick and effortless.
