Here on the site, I’ve already treated you to my mom’s classic American cookies (one of the blog’s most popular recipes !), cinnamon rolls, and even the Big Mac recipe.

My American mom’s cookies

Long story short, today we’re going all-in on indulgence with this classic of American amusement parks and fairs : fried Oreos.

The Origin of Fried Oreos

The story of fried Oreos is relatively recent and often tied to the culture of fairs and carnivals in the United States. While the exact origin of the dish is a bit hazy, it’s generally considered to have taken off in the early 2000s.

Photo taken this summer of a stand selling fried Oreos at Lake Compounce amusement park

Fried Oreos are Oreo cookies coated in pancake batter (or a similar batter), then fried until golden. This treat has become a staple at fairs (the famous « County fairs »), in amusement parks, and even on some restaurant menus.

They’re also easy to make at home, and people love to experiment with different batters and toppings.

Recipe for Fried Oreos

Authentic American Fried Oreos

 12 Oreo cookiesoil for fryingPancake Batter120 g all-purpose flour50 g sugar0.5 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking powder1.5 teaspoon vanilla extract1 egg yolk165 ml milk

Pour about 7.5 cm of oil into a saucepan and heat to 190°C. Check with a thermometer. In a bowl, combine the pancake batter ingredients and mix just until combined. A few lumps are fine. When the oil is hot, use a fork to coat each Oreo completely in batter, one at a time, then carefully lower into the hot oil. Separate any that stick together.Do not put all the Oreos in the batter at once; they will turn soft and fall apart before frying.Fry 3 to 5 cookies at a time. Do not overcrowd the pot. They are done when the outside is golden, about 30 to 60 seconds.Transfer the fried Oreos to paper towels or a wire rack to cool, then dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve immediately.

You can use single- or double-stuffed Oreos, or any flavor you prefer.
Sunflower oil is best for frying.
Store fried Oreos in an airtight container. They will soften, but can be recrisped in an air fryer or in the oven at 190°C if needed.

 AméricaineBeignets d'oreos, oréos, Oreos frits
["GET
